Reclaim Photography West Midlands is pleased to announce details of this eagerly awaited first international photography street exhibition, Reclaim the Streets, which will take place on Saturday 16 April 2016 from 10am to 3pm at the Black Country Living Museum Dudley, Grand Central Birmingham, and Harrison Learning Centre, Light House Media Centre and Mander Centre Wolverhampton.

This first international Reclaim Photography street exhibition will Reclaim selected public spaces, to promote the very best in art photography. Prints donated from regional and international amateur, professional and student photographers, will be displayed alongside internationally established and world renowned exhibiting art photographers.

Event organiser, Maxine Watts said, “Our aim was to offer a completely democratic and inclusive project, free of cost and competition. Students and individuals suffering particular hardships are often financially stretched or are unable to access photography competitions and exhibitions. This project has offered the public and emerging artists the opportunity to showcase their creativity and to exhibit their work alongside our international Reclaim Photography members and established internationally exhibiting photographers. We have been overwhelmed by their response, having received over 600 prints for the street exhibitions, thus exceeding our own expectations.”

To accompany the street events a unique joint gallery exhibition, hosted by the Long Gallery, University of Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton Art Gallery, will offer the public a unique opportunity to see a selection of photographs by UK and internationally exhibiting artists from Croatia, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Sweden and USA. The exhibition will showcase a selection of framed limited edition and signed hand prints from UK and internationally renowned and emerging art photographers, including fine art, landscape, mixed-media, photo-journalism, portraiture and social documentary photography.

Prints from both the street events and gallery exhibition will be auctioned to raise funds for regional charity Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer. The auction will take place on Wednesday 27 April 2016 (7:30-8:45pm), Wolverhampton School of Art Lecture Theatre, Wolverhampton. Free theatre auction tickets are available via Eventbrite and bids can also be placed in advance online at: http://www.reclaimphotographywestmidlands.com/online_bid_form.html

Maxine Watts said, “We are proud to announce this unique joint exhibition between the University of Wolverhampton and Wolverhampton Art Gallery. The exhibition, which will run for two weeks, will showcase the photographers’ work, making it accessible to everyone, while allowing the discerning collector to view the photographs in advance of the Wolverhampton School of Art auction.  The sales will raise funds for our regional charity Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer. It is thanks to the generosity of all of the photographers involved, who have selflessly donated their work for this worthy cause, that we are able to stage these exhibitions for the viewing public.”

The auction, hosted by Will Farmer of Fieldings Auctioneers, will offer the public the chance to bid on blind lots “The Luck is in the Draw”, which will include at least one signed or unique print from regional and international artists, in addition to photographs donated by the general public. The auction will provide photography collectors the opportunity to bid for these unique framed prints and support our international art photographers and our emerging artists; our great photographers of the future.

Note to editors

Reclaim Photography West Midlands came into being following conversations with our Sweden members, and subsequently led to an invitation to organise this first international artistic project.

The concept of Reclaim Photography began in Sweden during 2011 through a group of photographers who wanted to inspire people, take art photography back to the streets and public spaces, spread photography as an art form, and create a new visual language in our everyday environments.

Reclaim Photography West Midlands 2016 aims to provide the public with a unique opportunity to view the very best in art photography and to raise funds for regional charity Ladies Fighting Breast Cancer.

This first international Reclaim Photography project aims to offer complete inclusivity for participants, free of competition, encourage involvement from young people, particularly those most disadvantaged, and develop partnerships with community, member and student groups.
